Just like us humans, computers also need a name, a unique identity to get distinguished from rest of the PC’s connected on a network. You need to know your computer’s name to identify your PC when connected to a network. Or it can also be used to recognize one’s device when connecting to a printer or transferring files.

First we are going to learn how to find a computers name. I have included tutorial for both Windows and Mac devices.
If you want to check what your computer’s name is, you can follow these simple steps. The process is somewhat similar in all Windows builds, as for Mac, the process is in a separate section down below.
Find Computer’s Name (Windows 7/8/10)
Step 1. First visit My computer (Or This PC in Windows 10) and right click on any empty space.
Step 2. Now from all the options that you see, select Properties.
Step 3. There you can see all the properties of your computer like Windows name, Processor info, RAM info and more. Under computer name, domain, and workgroup setting tab, you will find the current name of your computer.
How to Find your Mac’s Computer Name
On mac the process becomes a little different but more simple and easy to do. To get the name of your machine which is running on Mac OS, all you have to do is open Apple Menu, then go to system preferences, from there, just click on Sharing and you will find your System’s name.
Changing Computer Name in Windows 10
Step 1. First step is to visit the my computer page on your PC, It is also called This PC on newer version of Windows.
Step 2. Next, do a right click anywhere on the blank space to open up a small dialog box.
Step 3. From here, select Properties, it will take you to a screen where you can see info about your computer along with the existing/current name of your PC.
Step 4. To change the name, click on Change Settings. A new dialog box will appear in front of you.
Step 5. Click on the button named “Change…” and there you can type the new name that you want to set for your computer.
Alternatively, if you have Windows 10 installed on your system, you can open Start menu and type ‘PC name‘ there. The first result will take you to the settings page of your PC where you can find the name of your computer along with other useful information.
Changing Computer Name in Windows 7/8
To change your computers name in windows 7 or Windows 8, all you have to do is navigate to the start bar. Open Control Panel from there(either by typing ‘Control Panel’ on the search bar or by locating and pressing the icon). Then from there, click on system and under the computer name tab, select ‘Change’. This will open a pop up where you can define the name for your Computer.
Change your Mac’s Name
Follow these steps to change name of your Mac.
Step1. Open System Preferences on your Mac Computer.
Step2. From there, navigate to Sharing.
Step3. A page will open with your system properties.
Step4. On a text field there, you can see the current name of your system. You can edit it set a new name for your Mac.
